Breaking into writing as a career, making money as a writer, getting into acting as a career, and entering the video game design industry with a union all require dedication, skill-building, networking, and perseverance:

1. Writing as a Career:
- Develop your writing skills through practice, workshops, and courses.
- Build a portfolio of your work, including articles, stories, or scripts.
- Network with other writers, editors, and publishers both online and offline.
- Consider freelancing for magazines, websites, or businesses to gain experience and exposure.
- Explore opportunities in content creation, copywriting, technical writing, or authoring books.
- Utilize online platforms like Medium, Wattpad, or Patreon to share your work and potentially earn income.
- Be persistent and adaptable, as writing careers often involve periods of freelancing, pitching, and rejections.

2. Making Money as a Writer:
- Freelance writing: Pitch articles, essays, or content to publications, websites, and businesses.
- Content creation: Create blog posts, social media content, or marketing materials for clients.
- Copywriting: Write advertising copy, product descriptions, or promotional content.
- Self-publishing: Author and publish books, e-books, or digital content on platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.
- Teaching and coaching: Offer writing workshops, courses, or coaching services to aspiring writers.
- Ghostwriting: Write books, articles, or speeches on behalf of clients who may not have the time or skill to do so themselves.

3. Getting into Acting as a Career:
- Take acting classes, workshops, and courses to hone your skills and technique.
- Participate in community theater, school productions, or independent films to gain experience and build your resume.
- Create an acting reel showcasing your performances and range.
- Attend auditions and casting calls for theater, film, television, commercials, and voice-over work.
- Network with actors, directors, agents, and casting directors to learn about opportunities and industry insights.
- Consider joining an actors' union like SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) for access to union jobs, protections, and benefits.

4. Entering the Video Game Design Industry with a Union:
- Gain relevant skills and knowledge in game design, programming, art, or storytelling through education, courses, or self-study.
- Build a portfolio showcasing your game design projects, including game prototypes, artwork, or game design documents.
- Network with professionals in the video game industry through industry events, conferences, online forums, and social media.
- Look for job openings or internships at game development studios, publishers, or indie game companies.
- Consider joining a game developers' union like the Game Workers Alliance or advocating for unionization within the industry to address issues like job stability, fair wages, and working conditions.
- Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and best practices to remain competitive and adaptable in a rapidly evolving field.

Overall, breaking into these creative industries requires passion, perseverance, continuous learning, and a willingness to seize opportunities and overcome challenges along the way. Building a successful career often involves a combination of talent, hard work, networking, and luck.

Hi Ryan, I cannot answer all of your questions but for acting I would recommend finding an agent if you want to follow acting. You should not have to pay for an agent, so avoid the scams of the ones that want you to pay. Headshots are one of the few things you should pay for, don't go crazy, but get a few for auditions.

Christina’s Answer

A good blending of both acting and writing is in comedy, for example, Adam Conover is not only a comedian but a WGA member who fought in the writer's strike this year. He runs a podcast I love listening to called Factually where he interviews journalists, scientists, and activists and gives them questions on a personable level. Gorge Carlin is another example of how good comedy punches up at people and makes them think about the world around them and his works are very wordy. My Mom and Dad saw his show before he passed away and his daughter defended against a company that would make an AI recreation of him and his work. One thing that AI can never do is understand jokes or the complexities of words, it only understands demands. There is a famous part in The Simpsons where the school bully writes on his iPad Beat up Martin and then regurgitates it into Eat up Martha. Duolingo claims to teach people all sorts of languages but languages have distinct cultures, dialects, sayings, and jokes that have a cultural structure, especially in German. Not all nations that speak German are going to speak Standard German, therefore how is Duolingo going to enjoy songs by Ursprung Buam or Franzl Lang, or do a Gstanzl which is even more complex?

Donnetta’s Answer

Breaking into writing as a career and making money from writing can be challenging, but here are some tips that can help that have been suggested to me:

1. Start a blog or write guest posts: Establish your online presence and build a portfolio by starting your own blog or writing guest posts for popular blogs in your niche. This will help showcase your writing skills and establish you as an authority.

2. Write consistently and build a body of work: Consistently creating high-quality content is crucial. Build a diverse portfolio by writing articles, short stories, essays, or even a novel. This will demonstrate your versatility and commitment to your craft.

3. Attend writing workshops and conferences: Participate in writing workshops, conferences, and literary events. These provide opportunities to learn from experienced writers, network with industry professionals, and potentially find mentors.

4. Submit to literary journals and magazines: Research and submit your work to reputable literary journals, magazines, and online publications. Getting published, even in smaller outlets, can help build your credibility and exposure.

5. Explore freelance writing opportunities: Look for freelance writing gigs on job boards, freelancing websites, or by reaching out to businesses and publications directly. Freelancing can help you gain experience, build your portfolio, and earn an income while pursuing your writing career.

6. Consider self-publishing: With the rise of self-publishing platforms, you can bypass traditional publishing routes and get your work directly to readers. However, be prepared to handle tasks like editing, formatting, and marketing yourself.

7. Network and build relationships: Attend literary events, join writing groups, and connect with other writers, editors, and industry professionals. Building relationships can lead to valuable opportunities and support.

8. Develop a niche or specialization: Consider focusing on a particular genre, writing style, or subject matter that sets you apart and helps you establish expertise.

9. Persistence and resilience: Breaking into writing can be a long and challenging journey. Maintain persistence, resilience, and a willingness to learn and adapt. Rejection is part of the process, but perseverance is key.

Remember, a successful writing career often requires dedication, hard work, and patience. Keep writing, continuously improve your craft, and explore various avenues to increase your chances of success.
