What can I do please?

I am 15 years old rising high school senior, I've been learning how to code in my free time for the past years or so. I have decided I want to study computer science in college. But I am still not entirely sure about my decision. #college #computer #computer-college #college-major

Why aren't you sure? There's no wrong answer here. What do you feel? Are there things you are scared of or hope for? 2. What motivated you to learn how to code? 3. What do you like to do in your free time? Many people are excited about computer science these days, and that's great! But there are a lot of other careers that are great, too. It's worth checking in with yourself to find the career that best fits you. Anna Zelenka

I’d definitely suggest continuing to pursue areas you are interested in. There are a variety of industries where this degree could be useful so I would suggest starting to research or explore what these different areas might entail. What you may do in the financial industry, the healthcare industry, or the tech industry are likely very different. And there could be career opportunities in this field you hadn’t even thought of or that don’t exist yet. You don’t have to decide today and you can always change your mind later (even decades into a career). But it’s good to start narrowing down what you do actually like. Every thing you learn today is information that can help you learn more about yourself, what you do and don’t like, and what’s important to you.

Thank you for your question. I am glad to hear that you have interested in Computer Science. I would suggest you can try doing some simple programming to determine what you have interest first.
Below are my suggestions:
1. Identify a simple programming language, e.g. Python, Scratch, etc. to start. You can find the syntax and structure online.
2. Start doing some simple programming and then do some simple projects, e.g. Control a toy car, robotic arm, etc.
3. You can determine what you have interest in programming
4. Attend information session hosts by computer science department in colleges. Speak to professors and alumni if you can.
5. Speak to someone who are working in the industry. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counsellor, your parents, etc.

Hi Dear,

It is good to know about a passion in the early stages of life during school.
If you have learned basic coding, then you should choose a degree in computer science and specialize in language programming.
There is a high demand for software developers on freelance platforms, and they are paid well for their work.

Do not overthink it. If your passion can become your profession, then you are the lucky girl.

It sounds like you have a passion for computer science which is great! There's already some good advice here, but I just wanted to let you know that you can always switch majors in college if you suddenly decide that computer science is not for you. As a high school student, keep trying to gain experience with computer science and find opportunities that may allow you to apply what you have been learning to a real world project. If you do enter college as a computer science major, the number of opportunities to gain valuable experience increases greatly, so make sure to take advantage of what's available. By participating in computer science related clubs and events, you will have a better chance at figuring out if you would like to continue pursuing a degree in computer science.
