What should you do—pick a stable job with a solid income or go after what will make you happy?

Money is important. We all want to be able to live comfortably. If I get an opportunity to have a stable job with a steady income that I’m not necessarily in love with, real talk should I take it? Or try to find what makes me “happy.”

David’s Answer

I like to start out with answering the question what is my Why? When you are at the start of your career and only have yourself to support your Why might be less oriented to $$ and things. If that is the case it is best to be more aggressive and experience as much as you can. My mentor explains this as building a life resume, experiences ultimately will make you more marketable in any career. In addition, the learnings you accrue from experiencing and growing trying diverse paths will help you obtain stability in your career. I have 22 years at the same company but the only thing that really gives me stability in my career is by contributing day over day. Hope this helps good luck.

My advice, swing for the fences and chase your passion. You will always have time to find a stable "safe" career in the future. In my 40's I have a nice safe stable career I love. This job would have bored my 20 year old self to death. I personally have no regrets about the years I spent chasing dreams. Just keep in mind, those years chasing dreams can be lean years.
