John’s Answer

You asked what do I need to do to operate heavy equipment?
Training and OJT operations with a qualified operator.

Where? ask the Unions Local 302, 612 and/or 370 for advice. Contact state or federally funded course like West Coast Training below. Lastly there are numerous schools for Heavy Equipment Operators across the US. Look up-online and ask them questions. Of course you pay for these.

Also you might look into the Navy CB Crane Operators and Army Corps of Engineers Crane Operator positions; what they require, schooling/training they offers.
