Hi Nathan, Jose Luis here, being an automotive Engineer is a great career choice because you have a lot of different options to work on, but first I will recommend start with the basics and then star to think what path you want to go.
If I can give you some steps to follow it will be:
1. Obtain the Necessary Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent: Focus on subjects like mathematics, physics, and mechanical engineering basics.
2. Gain Hands-On Experience: Internships and Apprenticeships: Work under experienced technicians to learn real-world applications.
3. Build Strong Problem-Solving Skills: Understand mechanical systems and how to troubleshoot issues.
4. Develop Customer Service and Communication Skills: Explain repairs and maintenance to clients in simple terms.
This is a great starting point, then you will start to define where you want to go, entrepreneur, automotive company, or even Motorsport.
Remember, small steps matter, don't get overwhelmed about what could be, focus on what you have now, its okay to not now every step of the journey, and trust me you will figure it out soon or later, you will have 40+ years of work ahead to figure it out but you only have 4 to enjoy friends and school life...

Michael’s Answer
This one is very simple to answer.
1. Always read the repair manual.
2. Check for service bulletins
3. Check vehicle service history.
4. Keep up on any training available to you.
5. Never think that you are better than anyone else or that they have nothing to offer you.
6. Pay attention to who does really good work in the shop, try to ask for that person's advice on anything you cannot find in the repair manual.
You will find that some of the really good technicians will freely give you advice and be very helpful to the new and upcoming technicians.
Be observant of what others are doing, ask if it look unfamiliar (you might learn a new and easier way), if the management asks for volunteers for special projects that may be difficult or seen as work that others do not want ( I did this with EVs and Exotics). It will make you a better technician.
