In a word: difficult. The games are large and complex, requiring a large multidisciplinary team to develop. Many people specialize in one system or area during development and focus on that throughout the project, building expertise and allowing them to get the most out of whatever they are working on. Teams will often split into pods, with each focused on different areas or game modes and communicating with each other when pieces overlap. There are a ton of moving parts, and its not unusual for builds to break or systems to fail, often requiring quick responses or fixes.

You also have to maintain good relationships with "first parties" (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Steam, etc...) where you'll be selling your game. You need to meet a different list of requirements for each platform to get approved for sale, which sometimes takes some negotiating as well.

But ultimately, its very rewarding. You get to work with some of the most talented individuals in the industry on something you love to do, and release games that are loved by millions of people around the world.
