Another big reason a person would not be hired during the interview process would be not being punctual. Being late to the interview shows that you don't value the opportunity and your interviewer may find it disrespectful as well. A personal rule of thumb is to always arrive 15 minutes early. That gives you time to sit down, relax, and mentally prepare yourself for the interview, while also giving your interviewer time to finish any task they may be working on and get ready for the interview.

The interview is very important and because it's very important you should be on your P's and Q's to sell yourself to the company. A reason for a person not to be hired would be lack of knowledge on the company, not dressed appropriately, slouching while in the interview, having your cell phone go off while in interview, not answering the questions appropriately, not telling the truth about what's on your resume. Those are just a few to name.
Thank you comment icon In addition to Jessica's EXCELLENT answer, consider this: the interview is also YOUR CHANCE to ask questions. This will make you look more interested in the job, which will make you look like a better candidate. You will also find out more information about the job and the company! Take some time to ask good questions! (An aside: the interview process is not merely an employer's chance to find out about you. It's also your chance to find out about them!) Christopher Lupone

Hi tim

I recently have the opportunity to interview some candidates, i must remark im not in the human resources department, im a network consulting engineer and i was in charge of interviewing candidates that already pass that filter, so one thing that i really focus is in the attitude of the candidate if it came to strong and we feel it did not match our company values it was a deal breaker, and also if the candidate was the opposite meaning shy, does not talk or participate too much, then it was also a deal breaker.

Its always important to be prepared for an interview. You should be dressed professionally and be on time. But most of all you should be prepared to talk about yourself and your experience. I find it helps to practice talking about your career/education history as well as any major accomplishments of yours. When you are prepared and practice saying these things to yourself or a friend it makes it flow much easier when you need to talk during an interview. An interview should feel like a conversation

It's important to research the company you are applying with. It will help you source questions so that when you are in your interview not only are they asking you questions, you will be able to ask them additional information about areas of the company you'd like to hear more about. It shows you are prepared and you did your homework.

It's also important to dress in alignment with the industry you are applying with. Smile, make eye contact, make sure your cell phone is turned off. Be on time, in fact arrive early so you can relax and breathe before meeting with the interviewer.

There are various reasons you may not get a position. Lots of competition out there. But you may also be overqualified. Don't be discouraged, keep looking and keep trying. Every interview experience is good practice and will help prepare you for the next time.

There are several reasons why someone may not be hired. They weren’t prepared, they did not appear professional, they came too late into the interview process, an internal employee showed interest in the position and moved forward or maybe the interviewer and interviewee didn’t have a great connection.

I am happy to offer advice that may help you get hired.

Setting yourself apart from other candidates is key to getting a good shot at the position.
First, when applying for a position make sure you meet the requirements of the role to be considered a viable candidate. Second, make sure your resume aligns with the job posted (you want to talk about previous experiences that align with the job in which you have applied for). Finally, once you have scheduled your 1st interview, make sure you arrive 10-15 minutes early whether in person or virtually. Being prepared is extremely important (research - the company, culture, employee reviews), excellent eye contact, staying engaged, prepared questions pertaining to the role/company (be sure to use different questions for each interviewer), have a handy copy of your resume to share and refer to during your interview. If you are interviewing virtually, dress to impress, make sure you have a solid internet signal and you are able to connect to the link provided, a clean/clear background so there are no distractions taking you away from the stage, the camera should only show you from your chest up and should be level with your face.

Be sure to silence your cell phone and never use your work computer.
