Hi,

That is a tough question which very many people ask; What should I do or what should I become? The immediate field that jumps to my mind, based upon your question, is the field of Architectural Design or Engineering. I suggest you Google these two areas to see if either seems to be what you might like. After that I would investigate colleges that offer these fields so that you can get an idea of the subjects required. You could also Google these two fields to determine the companies that hire this type of Engineer / Designer and what they require for an education and what type of projects they do and buildings they design. Lastly, if Architectural Engineering looks like it might be what you want to do, make an appointment through the admissions office to visit a local college and meet with someone in that department to discuss the profession.

Good luck

Michelle’s Answer

Hi Keelin,

I actually was very good at math and drawing so I decided at a young age to look for fields that combined the two so that led me to engineering. You could be a drafter, Mechanical Engineer and/or Architect. These combine math, science and drawing.

Andy’s Answer

Hi Keelin,

That's a great question that many people have to ask themselves. The good news is that there isn't just one thing that you have to do for the rest of your life. You could choose to study math and work in the finance industry or in academics or whatever while you also continue to create art on the side. Or perhaps you can choose to integrate mathematics into your art like M. C. Escher did.

There is even a position in many video game companies called technical artist (or some variation of that) that requires technical skill working with artists to get the 3D art into the game world.

With respect to colleges and universities, I must admit that there are not many with strong programs in both math and art. So you might have to decide to study one at a time. From personal experience I know that that can work out great. I studied biology as an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley.

After that I worked in the IT field for a while. I went on to study illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and received my master of fine arts degree while also working. I now work full-time as an artist in the video games industry and my biology background does help me when I design creatures and characters.

Andy recommends the following next steps:

Look into colleges and universities that might be strong in both disciplines
Look at schools in math that might be next to other schools with strong art programs
Look into jobs that bridge the divide and utilize both disciplines
