How can I make a difference within the product development field?
I'm going to college this fall to major in food science, and I'm excited! But I'm also apprehensive about the impact I can make. The food industry in America needs a lot of help, and I want to work towards bettering our methods, ingredients, and packaging, for example, banning the use of unnatural food dyes. How can I make a difference when so much needs to be done, but I'm just one person? #Spring25

Hi,
Food Science sounds exciting. I'd suggest seeking a position with the FDA. The Food and Drug Administration is the entity that set the standards for the food in the United States.
You may think about obtaining an internship at your local health department, as well.

To make food better, it's important to learn how modern farming and worldwide production affect nature. There's a lot to discover in integrated food systems, which could be a new way to produce food sustainably. Keep exploring and good luck!

It’s inspiring to see your commitment to making a real difference in food product development. The challenges in the food industry are big, but meaningful change often comes from focused, persistent efforts. Start by deepening your knowledge in food science and technology, understand how ingredients, processing, and packaging affect safety, nutrition, and sustainability.
In product development, prioritize innovation that balances consumer health with environmental responsibility. For example, pushing for natural ingredients and reducing reliance on artificial additives like synthetic dyes is a strong step forward. Also, explore sustainable packaging solutions to reduce waste and environmental impact.
Finally, don’t underestimate the power of research and data-driven decisions. Use science to back your ideas and advocate for change effectively.
All the best.

Hi Melody, This is a great career choice. Having interned when I was in college for a major food company working in their packaging and food science R&D facility I can say that although you are one person there are many opportunities to make a difference with your precence, focus and with your time. This means when you are in your studies you can choose topics that expand your interests, choose a company to intern or work for that aligns with the mission you would like to see progress for the American food supply. In your educational pursuit you can also look for electives outside your immediate college that might broaden your learning experience, like public policy, supply chain or a global business class.
