I recently graduated last spring and into a job market that was super competitive. I found my peers had the same experience with different majors. Despite what was going on, one of the biggest reasons I received an internship and full time offer was due to what I included in my resume. Working part time is a step towards the right direction in gaining experience and standing out. However, with a competitive market, it's important to take more steps to stand out from your peers as many of them may also be working. Through adding extracurriculars, it shows you're well rounded and can juggle multiple important responsibilities. As extracurriculars are unpaid, it's also great to show you're willing to do work in your own time. Overall, if possible, adding extracurriculars can only help you and not hurt your resume!

Extracurriculars can be an important resume addition to your schooling and work experience. They highlight your ability to 1) take on additional activities and balance demands 2) can involve leadership positions and skills and 3) showcase you as a well rounded person. When looking for jobs, people will look at your resume for your academic performance, but they will also want to see your interests and how those can align with your future job and your future coworkers interests.

Danielle’s Answer

Don't worry about adding more activities just to make your resume look better. Working 15 hours a week while studying full time is a big achievement you should be proud of. It shows future employers that you are dedicated, hardworking, and able to handle more responsibilities.

Instead, spend time on activities that make you happy and thankful. These are the important qualities that will help you succeed in anything you choose to do in the future.

I think it is important to highlight any activities/clubs/projects that might be applicable to the role that you are applying for. As an engineering student, if you have any things related to that, I would definitely add to the resume such as clubs or projects.
