Hi, Mawa !

Your first step is going to decide at which college to Major in Public Policy. Colleges that you should look into now before you graduate are Cornell University, State University of New York at Albany, SUNY Empire State College, New York University, CUNY School of Professional Studies, Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, and Stony Brook University which all offer the Public Policy Major.

Go to each of these college's websites to learn about each one's Program in Public Policy. Take notes to refer to later on to compare the programs. Usually, most colleges don't mention Internships on their websites but some do, so that can be a way to find out. You can also phone the college and ask. Most times college students are placed in internships in their Junior and Senior years, but not all colleges do that so it would be important to find out for each college or the college you know you'll attend.

Internships will not be a huge part of getting you to becoming a policy maker, but your academic education and special projects you do in college, networking and making professional contacts, plus the necessary Degree and any work experience will add to your qualifications step by step. There will be lots of opportunity for you to get experience while you are in college and after graduation.

Also consult with the academic counselor at your current school as well as the college you will attend to find out of you'll need your Masters Degree for this career. You have chosen a wonderful career interest that can make an impact on the improvement of many people's lives and quality of living in our country !

While in college, you most likely will need to take courses in government, political science, public speaking and others. You will find out what is required when you read about each colleges' Public Policy Major Programs. Keep your writing skills up and know the Constitution and Bills of Rights, State Constitution and laws around many other things. It most likely will be a continual part of your major.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best. You will be making memorable and appreciated contributions to society with this career !

Hi Mawa, It sounds like you are very passionate about public policy and government. I admired that very much, as it doesn't sound like an easy job to create a policy that adheres to the public's best interest.

I'd say once you start your freshman year in your college of choice, it would be great to attend one of those student events that is typically held during the school year to learn about programs and students' unions.

You'll get exposure to all of the programs and activities available, and you never know—you might run into a public government union.

I also recommend visiting the career counseling office at your college.

Best wishes,
Cathy
