What is the best advice you could give to someone who's going into college undecided?

I've put a lot of thought into what I want to major in but I'm still not sure what I want to do. What would be the best course of action for me? Thank you for your consideration #spring25!

Hi Fiona!
I also entered college undecided because i was unsure what i wanted to do right out of high school. I think it's completely normal! I have 3 ideas that hopefully can help.

1. Think about what are you passionate about. Which classes do you enjoy being in and reading about or doing homework for? For example do you like science, and seem to get good grades in that area? Do you love going to art class? Maybe this can give you some hints. Generally things that we enjoy and are good at, are natural ideas of where to focus on for your major.

2. Take a career aptitude test and see if that can help give you some directional advice. I did this at my high school library, and it did help me narrow down what might be a good fit for me. Here is a free one i found online:

3. Consider taking courses in different areas during your initial college year as "undeclared", to see if anything appeals to you that way, that helps your declare your major. If you still don't know then, consider declaring something general like Business Administration. Generally a degree like this provides some flexibility to go into multiple different career path areas.

And finally- don't feel too pressured! You can change your mind during college, and change your major if you find a new passion while there. Also its totally possible that your future career is not in the exact area that you studied- and that's okay. I ended up majoring in Architecture, Business Administration, and Sociology. And my career for the past 15 years has been something in a totally different area, which i really enjoy and find rewarding.

Good luck!
Amanda

It's completely normal to feel unsure, so don't worry about making a quick decision. Many general study classes are required, no matter what major you choose. Math, English, and Science are all part of the journey. Start with these prerequisites and clear them out of the way. The whole college experience, from the classes to the people you meet, can really help you find your direction. Having a good guidance counselor is essential, too. They can help you figure out which classes will be useful across different fields.

Hi Fiona, I was on your shoes way back when I graduated from High School. I don't really have an idea at all what course to take as there were so many out there. I want to try lot of things but I can only choose one. What I did was to make use of my 2 months summer break to talk with my parents, friends on what are their suggestions. But the most important thing is that I asked myself what I want to be in the future and how do I see myself 5 to 10 years from that time. That's where I fully decided that I want to join in the engineering field. Hope this helps you. :) Take care.

VINEET’s Answer

It's perfectly fine to start college without a declared major. Embrace your first year as a chance to explore a variety of subjects—choose classes that truly capture your interest. Engage with professors, advisors, and fellow students from different fields to gather valuable insights. Avoid rushing into a decision due to pressure or choosing what feels "safe." Instead, focus on discovering what truly excites you and where your strengths lie. Remember, college is a time for personal growth and exploration, not just preparing for a career. Stay open, curious, and take initiative. By staying involved and trusting the journey, you'll naturally find your path. Often, the right direction becomes clear through experience, not immediate certainty.

Hi Fiona, hope you're having a great day! Focus on what you love and what excites you. What are you really passionate about? When you chase these dreams, work feels fun, and time flies by. It's also perfectly fine if your interests change over time; it happens to many people. If that occurs, simply adjust your goals and embrace the new path.

Hi Fiona, My advice is to think about interests before you chosse on what you want to do the major. Use your first year to explore different subjects, talk to professors and students in various majors, and pay attention to what actually excites you—not just what sounds good on paper.

Ramya’s Answer

The best advice I can offer is to follow your passion. Spend some time thinking about what you truly love doing—something that excites you, something you feel you're naturally good at, and something where you can really shine. If there's an area where you feel confident you can make a difference, that's a clear sign it's the right path for you. Once you've found that passion, start searching for a course or program to help you build those skills and turn your passion into a rewarding career.
