I am guessing if you're applying you will have already taken the DAT, and the grades the dental schools will see are almost all in. I also assume you have checked the websites of the schools you anticipate applying to to be sure you have all the course requirements.
I agree with Minghao that having specific experience--shadowing a dentist or working as an assistant is a way you can stand out.
I am l a very long time out of school--I don't remember ANY of the schools to which I applied asking for a personal statement. But I would formulate a credible reason for your interest in dentistry. I didn't have a ready answer, and 52 years ago thinking about my first dental school interview still stings; it devolved into a lecture--that I really couldn't tell them why I was applying (I had a reason, but these guys have seen and heard it all, and they can sniff out B.S. quickly).
But something else I learned at my interviews--you go in, you do your best, and you don't second-guess yourself. Because after that first awful interview, I was accepted. In fact, it was the only school to accept me. I had a GREAT interview at another school, and I was wait-listed there. So I clearly either was delusional about how badly that interview went, or I simply had no idea what they were looking for.
Good luck to you

Minghao’s Answer

The most important factor for getting into a top dental school is having a well-rounded and compelling application. Strong DAT scores and a solid GPA—especially in science courses—are definitely key, but they’re just the foundation. What really helps you stand out is your personal statement and how clearly you can show your motivation for dentistry. Schools want to see not just that you’re qualified, but that you have a real passion for the field and a sense of purpose. Clinical or shadowing experience also plays a big role, because it shows that you’ve taken the time to understand what the career is actually like. As you prepare to submit, focus on making your personal statement feel authentic and personal, not just a list of accomplishments. Also, be sure your letters of recommendation come from people who know you well and can speak to your strengths. And finally, submit as early as you can—June is a great time—and if interviews are part of the process, start practicing now, especially for MMI or behavioral-style questions. You’re already on a strong path—just keep putting in the effort and let your passion come through.
