What would you say is your daily routine during work, how long is your shift, and do you necessarily work with hazardous material for Nurse Anesthetists?

This is for an interview, and I'd love for a nurse to answer! Thanks!

James’s Answer

I am not a nurse, but as a physician who has worked on many different areas of medicine, I can tell you that most nurses work predictable shifts (days, PMs, or nights). There are certainly exceptions, and because of nurse shortages it is common to have overtime. A few nurses take jobs where they may be on call to come in for emergencies that the on-shift staff cannot handle (OR nurses, most commonly). If one goes on to become an advanced practice nurse, the amount of responsibility goes up, the pay goes up, but the hours often also go up.
Nurse anesthetists also usually work predictable shifts, but in some settings may be a part of the on-call team I mentioned above. Although they work with hazardous materials, there are many appropriate safeguards, regulations, and procedures that make it very rare for any dangerous exposures (an example is that anesthetic gases are scavenged and expelled/adsorbed, so the amount one might breathe in is negligible).
I will look forward to learning from nurses who respond to your question.
