Hello, Student,
It's a great idea to start early by reaching out to professors to inquire about research opportunities. Your school’s advising office, career center, and research programs are excellent resources for finding internships, especially during the summer. You can also explore platforms like Handshake, LinkedIn, and specialized job boards such as EnvironmentalCareer.com, Conservation Job Board, EcoEmploy, Idealist.org, Earthwatch Institute, BWork, The Green Jobs Network, and VolunteerMatch to find relevant environmental opportunities.
Joining student clubs related to the environment is another fantastic way to meet people and discover internships or projects. Developing skills such as GIS, R, Python, and Excel will also give you an edge in this field. Keep track of all the opportunities you apply for by organizing deadlines and contact information in a simple spreadsheet.
Start contacting professors or professionals—most are eager to guide students who exhibit genuine passion and initiative. Apply for as many opportunities as you can, whether they’re internships or volunteer roles, to gain valuable experience. Stay curious, stay involved, and keep up with industry updates. Remember, every step you take now will add up over time. If you'd like, I can help you create a personalized internship tracker, build your resume or provide feedback on it, and even help you write an email to a professor.
Here are some key programs and resources you should explore:
The NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program offers research opportunities in various fields, which you can explore on the official NSF REU website.

NASA Internships provide hands-on experience in space-related fields, and you can apply through the NASA Internships portal.
https://intern.nasa.gov/
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) offers a variety of conservation internships and volunteer opportunities, which you can find at SCA’s website.
https://www.thesca.org/
The Department of Energy's Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program offers opportunities for students to work at national laboratories, and you can apply via the SULI page.

Good luck with your search!

Experience is wonderful and an internship provides a good basis for supporting your career interests.
Find the company you WANT to work for, each out on their website. Get the name of the HR contact for Internships and express your interest. Update your resume and share it with them.
Be sure to reach out to your university’s career center and ask for opportunities in your major local to where you will be living.
LinkedIn is a great place to look for positions as well. Reach out to family and friends too.
Start early. Summer internships fill up early Spring. Visit Job Fairs as well.

Start Early: Many Spring internships are posted in the Fall. Begin your search as early as August/September of the previous year.
Your College Career Center: This should be your first stop! They often have listings specifically for your school and can provide guidance.
Networking: Talk to professors, attend career fairs, and connect with people in your field.
Online Job Boards: Sites like Indeed, LinkedIn, and Handshake often have internship postings.
Company Websites: Many companies list internships directly on their websites, often in a “Careers” or “Students” section.
