Idalsy’s Answer

the first step is understanding the task you are being asked to do. Break them down into small pieces and take your time analyzing them and do your research.

PEG’s Answer

When I have a large writing project, I like to break it up into segments and give myself goals/deadlines along the way.

I start with the end! If I know my end goal, then it’s easy for me to look at the calendar and work backwards to my start date.

This process keeps it easy, simple and fun ( not overwhelming), and I always build in some extra time before deadline to review and edit.

Sometimes ( often) I get on a roll and write more than my goal, which is wonderful! On the days that I simply can’t write, I do SOMETHING to move the project forward; research, images, quotes- anything that is progress and makes me feel I have accomplished something for the day!

* NOTE: be sure you are realistic in your goal segments; for example, keep your goals simple in the beginning and then see how you progress. We aren’t machines, and sometimes we need a day off!

Gus’s Answer

Definitely set small goals for yourself to make the paper seem less daunting. If you break up the paper into 4 smaller “sections” and then a fifth summary/review section, you will have more motivation and stamina to tackle 5 mini goals throughout the semester. Breaking up long assignments can be a useful tool to breaking up large time requirements.

Jonathan’s Answer

Start small and take it step by step. Begin with something simple, like writing the title one evening, then move on to your thesis statement the next day. Gradually, build your paper piece by piece. It doesn't have to be perfectly organized from the start; the important thing is to make progress. This approach has helped me handle tough projects both in school and as a project manager.

Avoid leaving everything until the last minute. Doing so doesn't give justice to all your hard work throughout the semester. I wish I had realized this during my undergraduate years, as it became clear to me in graduate school that this method just makes perfect sense.
