Is it still safe to pursue a career within the FBI? #Spring25
With all the turmoil happening in DC and with many government agencies being dismantle, is it wise to pursue a career within the FBI. I am a high school senior planning to major in Chemistry/Forensic Science with the hopes of landing a career in the FBI however I am nervous if there will be any opportunities when I graduate.

Hi frank,
It’s understandable to feel uncertain given the current climate, but pursuing a career in the FBI can still be a wise and rewarding choice. While there may be political or organizational changes happening, the core mission of the FBI—protecting the nation, upholding justice, and addressing threats like cybercrime, terrorism, and forensic investigations—remains critical and enduring. Agencies like the FBI often adapt to challenges by evolving their focus, such as increasing emphasis on areas like forensic science, cybersecurity, and counterintelligence. Your planned major in Chemistry/Forensic Science is highly relevant, as these fields are integral to solving crimes and supporting national security. The demand for skilled professionals in forensic analysis, crime scene investigation, and lab work isn’t going away anytime soon.
That said, it’s smart to stay informed and flexible as you plan your career path. Keep an eye on trends within federal law enforcement and consider building versatile skills that could apply to other roles if needed, such as state or local agencies, private forensic labs, or even corporate security. Internships, networking with professionals (through events or platforms like LinkedIn), and staying active in organizations like the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) can help you stay ahead. Ultimately, your passion for forensic science and dedication to public service will open doors, whether with the FBI or elsewhere. Focus on excelling academically and gaining practical experience—those steps will prepare you for success no matter how the landscape shifts.
Best of luck!

Hi Frank,
Honestly, nobody knows what's going to happen with this administration. Your concern is justified. But the FBI is not the only forensics lab in the country.
There are professional societies and several crime labs in CA who might be in the best position to advise you further. You can ask for an informational interview and ask questions about their work, opportunities for internships and career paths.
Here are a couple of links to try:
https://cacnews.org/membership/lab_directory
https://oag.ca.gov/bfs
https://me.lacounty.gov/forensic-labs/
https://www.ocsheriff.gov/commands-divisions/investigations-special-operations-command/oc-crime-lab
https://www.facrimelab.com/
A degree in chemistry and even in forensics opens up many directions and job opportunities. Don't narrow down your career path too early, keep an open mind and pivot to a different career if necessary. Your undergrad degree does not determine the rest of your life.
I hope this helps! All the best to you!
