Sonya’s Answer

Hi Jessica, that is a good question.
The requirements for speech-language pathology include:
Bachelor's Degree
Master's Degree
State Licensure
Passing score on Praxis Exam
Optional: ASHA certification (www.asha.org)
There are in-person and online programs.

The requirements for speech-language pathology assistant include:

There are in-person and online programs.

Sonya recommends the following next steps:

Decide if this is something you might want to do.
Observe a speech language pathologist in the settings you are thinking of working in.
Apply to an accredited program and get accepted. Bachelors then Masters.
Graduate and be a great therapist. The world is waiting for you!

Susan’s Answer

Hi Jessica,
Sonya has given you a great overview of requirements to become an SLP. It may seem daunting at first, but if you take it one step at a time, you will find that it is a very manageable process. Hopefully, you will have support at every stage so you can continue to move toward your ultimate goal of becoming an SLP. This is a great profession in high demand. If you think it is a fit for you, you should go for it!

I'm not sure where you are in the process right now; if you are in high school or are in an undergraduate program. Most people who pursue SLP as a profession obtain an undergraduate degree in speech-language pathology (also called communication disorders). If you do this, you will have all of the classes and clinical observation hours you will need to apply to a Master's program. Once you are enrolled in a Master's program, that program will help you monitor your progress towards meeting the requirements for your clinical certification from ASHA, which you will need to practice in most settings. Sonya has given you a good set of next steps for you to follow. Get yourself into a good undergraduate program and you will be on your way.
