What should I expect as a kinesiology student?

I’m going to be a freshman next year studying kinesiology, and I’m curious what the experience is like. What should I expect regarding classes, labs, and overall student life as a kinesiology major? #Spring25

Ohayo Karson,

Oh, that's awesome to hear. As a kinesiology major, you're in for a mix some hands-on experiences and theory-based learning, and it can be super interesting. So here is what I can sneak you about. Basically you can expect a lot of science-heavy courses at the start, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and kinesiology itself. It can feel pretty intense with all the memorization, but it’s fascinating when you start connecting the dots. You’ll probably spend a lot of time in labs where you'll learn things like how muscles work, how the body moves, and how to assess and prevent injuries. It’s a lot of learning by doing.

In terms of student life, well, it can vary depending on your school, but there are usually clubs or events focused on health, fitness, and wellness. Plus, since kinesiology is about understanding the body, there are often opportunities to shadow professionals, whether that’s physical therapists, personal trainers, or sports scientists. It’s a pretty cool field to network in.

Lastly, be ready for some group projects and practical assignments. Whether it's doing a fitness assessment on a classmate or researching an injury, you're going to get your hands dirty (in a good way ofc). But don’t stress, it’s all part of the fun. Just remember the first will be the hardest and it will ease and get comfortable as you move on. Hope this helped clear up a little, feel free to reach out anytime. All the best out there buddy.
