How can I include my Latino heritage in a future dentistry career? Also, what would your advice be to a first-generation pre-dental student seeking opportunities to serve abroad and eventually open up a clinic abroad? What steps should I take? #Spring25
I am an incoming freshman at university, and I am excited to embark on my journey to become a dentist. Once done with dental school, how should I include latino heritage into my profession, and how can I open up clinics abroad? Should I start by working for a clinic or go ahead and open my own? I would love to open one abroad, but I am unsure of the cost and risks. #Spring25

Dear Ariela:
I wish you much success in your academic career. Dentistry is a career that requires hard study, hard work, and 100% dedication...and once you earn your degree, you'll face a world unlike anything you imagined. You must build a career path; I don't recommend starting your own practice without first practicing as a dentist in the private healthcare system. University gives you tools, but the true learning experience, both in clinical practice and healthcare management, will come through your professional practice. Take one step at a time, and you'll see how opportunities will present themselves along the way.
It's a wonderful career, but you need to partner with the right people to successfully launch your own practice or clinic.
You will definitely achieve your goals, the determination you have is the best start!
