Let's say a person has fallen behind in a few classes and tests are coming up/the due dates for assignments are drawing near, what would be the best way to go about the situation? It would not necessarily be an advanced learning and apprehension since it would be within a short amount of time but more so to the extent of passing and perhaps a little further if able. How might that person deal with catching up in an efficient way and what choices or alternatives should that person consider in order to reduce the possibility of the same occurrence happening again?

In a more simplistic statement, how does an individual deal with extensive procrastination?

Nayra’s Answer

Hi Lesley, this is such a relatable question!

Procrastination is way more usual nowadays because of the many distractions available at our disposal. It does not happen because of a lack of commitment but rather the lack of motivation and human nature, as it is for us to choose to postpone tasks that seem difficult and complex. This happens to all of us, but it is important for people to be assured that it is never late and there are always alternatives and things you can do to catch up on your commitments.

For students that are falling behind:
1. Re-prioritize tasks in order of urgency and importance so you can focus your time and keep up with the workload that has been procrastinated.
2. If you have missed an assignment's deadline, maintain communications with your teachers open and reach out for help. Keep in mind that once you are at this point, it is important to commit yourself to make an extra effort.
3. Reach out to fellow students for help; they may be able to provide a different perspective on lectures or even study notes.

Once you have realized that the things that you are procrastinating are important, and you want to do better, just know that the first step is being honest with yourself and believing you are capable of great things. As for best practices to prevent procrastination the following actions can help:

Nayra recommends the following next steps:

Keep a neat calendar, and block focus time to study and work on assignments.
Join a study group; it helps stay motivated.
Set up goals and organize your priorities by categories. Your top three will be the things that you need to focus on the most.
Get yourself a personal agenda to document and organize your thoughts, goals and priorities. When you feel overwhelmed by the things you need to do, you can go back to it.
Create to do lists for the things you need to get done each week.
