Companies are mainly looking for internship applicants to show genuine interest on the field, school/major/grades, good communication skills and some type of relevant work or school experience. Even extracurricular activities that show leadership, organization or communication skills would be very beneficial.

When applying for jobs, it's important to consider how AI serves as a tool many HR/hiring groups utilize to do a first filter of qualified applicants. My suggestion would be to develop a list of skills you've been building in your coursework & especially any areas you've excelled at, then include key words that AI will pick up in your application. A good way of determining which is to look for key skills highlighted in the posting.
While you may not have a ton of experience just yet, you're developing a tool box of skills that you're able to apply in the internship, so it's super important to highlight those.
I also recommend sending a cover letter and references with your application to help set yourself apart. I'd recommend requesting references from your professors since they'll be able to attest to your skills & compatibility for the internships you're applying for.

Companies are looking for what projects you have been working on in school that give you some foundation for the internship you are appliying for. You need to articulate how what you have studied in school will correlate with the company you are applying for. The extracurriculars are really important if you can show that were part of a team or club and took leadership in role in those things. It shows that you are willing to work in multiple aspects of your life. If you grades are high and you have many extracurriculars it shows that you have great time managment skills. Listing the skills you have picked up on and exceled in is another piece of information you should have in there as well.

Hi Alissa!
I am a marketing director who interviews college students for internship roles at my company. From my point of view, I would say that I look for these things:
- Handling multiple responsibilities: I would suggest that you get involve with extracurriculars and try to get leadership positions in whatever extracurricular activity that you can. Clubs, sports, special interest groups, etc. At work, you are handling multiple tasks at one time so I look for candidates that are starting to learn that skill in college by not only focusing on school but juggling other passions or interests as well.
- Eagerness to learn: Your attitude and eagerness to learn is important. We aren't looking for someone who knows everything because the whole point of an internship is to teach you what a career in this field could look like. I look for candidates who will make the most of this experience by being willing to learn. Having a positive attitude is also important as managers and directors are more willing to invest time into someone who is genuinely interested and open to feedback.
Hope that helps!
Thanks,
Cathy
