Hi Olivia,
You shouldn’t worry about what others are doing. You should focus on what you can do to make yourself standout. There are thousands if not hundreds of thousands that will be picking the same major in different schools across the country. It’s best to do things that will make your resume standout against the rest of the other applicants. For example, for STEM majors it’s advantageous to acquire a research internship. Usually they start posting online during the fall semester and have a deadline in early spring for most summer internships. This is just an example, but it will help you stand out because not everyone has experience related to their major coming right out of school. Moreover, not everyone has the same career aspirations as you. Some may have the same major, but do something completely different with their degree. Everyone has their own time line. Don’t get caught up worrying about others.
Best of luck!

My suggestion to you is to let your passion and interests guide you as you choose your major. If you end up in a very popular major that is OK, but I'll give you a tip. When you and all of your peers have the same skillset, you will need to figure out a way to differentiate yourself from the crowd. One of ways to differentiate could be through your minor. Maybe you differentiate via your extracurricular activities. Another way to differentiate is to think ahead to what types of problems you want to work on with your degree, and steer your studies to focus on those types of issues.
