How do I deal with burn out?

I've recently been accepted to the College of Engineering at NC State and plan on majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Though I've come such a long way, I've been putting off a lot of work to the side that I know I need to do, and I don't know why. I feel burnt out, and I'm not quite sure what to do.

Hi David,

It's completely normal to procrastinate a little! Maybe try using a handwritten to-do list. Crossing off tasks can feel like a big achievement each day.

For burnout, consider reaching out to a friend. Going out or having a chat can really help. Everyone experiences burnout at some point. If it feels ongoing, visiting a doctor might be a good idea to check for any underlying issues.

Making a list in priority order helps me stay focused, and accomplish the most important tasks first. It is key to stay up on the your assignments, otherwise it can feel overwhelming. If you are feeling burned out, take a break to do something fun, and then get back to your work. If the feeling persists, perhaps consider re-assessing if this is the right field for you. Talk to a career advisor or someone else you respect. There is nothing wrong with changing fields to one that perhaps better aligns to your overall "work-life balance". Engineering studies is perhaps one of the most rigorous undergraduate degree programs.

Congratulations! With so much to do, make a list of tasks and rank them by urgency and importance. You can't do everything at once, but you can plan which tasks to tackle each week.
