Great question, Sophie. I went to college away from home, and it was my first time living alone. I would encourage you to get plugged into a community or organization on campus to allow you to make friends. It helped me with not getting homesick, and I met some great friends I still have to this day. I love Aileen's answer above too! I had plenty of pictures around my room of my family and friends from back home. I would call home and text friends often to see how they were doing. It's totally normal to miss them!

I would also encourage you to give yourself grace! I learned a lot of things about myself while living on my own: my preferred level of cleanliness, what food I liked to cook, when I liked to eat, how often I liked to do my laundry, and so many other things that I never had to think about while living with my family. There's a lot more freedom that I had that I wasn't used to, and it was exciting! Enjoy this time - it's a very unique time in your life. Wishing you all the best!

Aileen’s Answer

Hi Sophie,

Try to take a lot of photos and hang them around your room. Making your dorm feel like home will really help. Try to also make a couple of good friends. They will be your support system while you’re on campus. It gets hard at times, but making time to call your family and friends that are at home will make it easier on you. Don’t isolate yourself! I did my first year and it made it hard to focus on school. Also try getting hobbies to fill your time when you need a break from studying. Some examples would be reading, joining a club on campus, exercising, knitting, etc. Hobbies will help you destress and also fill your time when you feel lonely.

Best of luck!
