Will it be easier to follow a career in film if I first get a degree in business administration ?

I want to be able to find a job after I finish with my 4 years in college.

María Fernanda’s Answer

Hi Angie,

I hope you're doing well!

Choosing between filming and business administration is a tough decision. It really depends on what you want for your future. I suggest checking out job listings on LinkedIn in the area where you want to study both fields. Read the job descriptions carefully. The most important question to ask yourself is: What makes me happier?

Steve’s Answer

If you're eager to dive into the world of filmmaking, having a business degree or even a law degree can be really useful. For those who want to explore the creative or production side, focusing your studies on filmmaking is key. A business degree might not directly help you become a writer, director, or producer, but it can still be valuable.

If you enjoy business, making deals, and working with people, consider taking some business courses while you earn your film degree. Remember, neither path is "easier." Both require networking, hard work, and adding value to everything you do.

Good luck, and enjoy the journey!

Chris’s Answer

It really depends on which aspect of filmmaking you want to get into: acting, writing, directing, or simply an executive in the industry?

Writing is the easiest to do, at least in terms of trying to balance it with work. Acting and directing are going to be a bit trickier because those will require much more of your time.

If you simply want to be an executive, then start researching jobs at film studios and production companies. I don't know much about that aspect of the industry, but I expect it would be just as competitive as any other position.

But in the end, it boils down to the last line in Maria's answer: What do you enjoy more? What makes you feel the most alive?

Whatever your answer is, follow that, even if it's an uncertain path. Job security and a steady paycheck are important, yes, but there's also something to be said for waking up each morning and looking forward to the day rather than simply existing.

Good luck!
