Could I truly fulfill the role as a future Doctor if I don't challenge our unfair healthcare system?

As someone who wants to be a Doctor in the future this is something I think about a lot. I want to help everyone but realistically I can’t because the system is rigged to help those who have more money rather than people who need more help. If I don’t take the risk to help others can I truly call myself a doctor? I don’t want to be a doctor for the money, but to help patients. Humanity doesn’t need more money, but more care.

I struggle with this daily as a medical student finishing up school. But the truth is, we need more doctors who think exactly like you — because they become the strongest advocates for their patients. Medicine isn’t just about treating disease; it's about standing up for people who have been left behind by the system.

As physicians, we hold a unique place in society — we see firsthand the consequences of inequality and can use that knowledge to drive real change. Beyond the clinic and hospital walls, doctors can be powerful voices in public policy, healthcare reform, and community advocacy. By speaking up, educating others, and pushing for better systems, we can make a bigger impact than we realize.

It’s not easy, and it can feel overwhelming at times, but that willingness to care deeply and challenge injustice is exactly what the future of medicine needs. Keep that fire — it’s what will make you an extraordinary doctor.
