How do I decide what I'd like to do with my biology major?

This upcoming fall, I'm majoring in biology at UCSB. I've always been passionate about science and hope to pursue a career in STEM. However, I'm having trouble deciding which Biological career would be the most fulfilling to me. I love the ocean and find it, as well as the creatures within it, so fascinating, so I'd like to explore marine biology. However, I've also been exposed to oncology and other realms of the medical field since I was very young, and the idea of directly helping others as a nurse or doctor is very appealing to me. What should the governing factors be in deciding what I pursue, and what sort of things should I do in college to help me discover which career would be fulfilling to me?

Your passion for Biology is fantastic, your potential career choice in Marine Biology can coincide with your strong need to help and contribute in the Oncology field. There are breakthroughs in Marine research that have had a significant contribution in Cancer research. Follow what you are passionate about as it will bring great things.

Shadowing a professional for a few weeks is necessary. Internships can be helpful as well. You'll have an opportunity to network and expose yourself to variety of careers...and get insight from other people's journey.
I was interested in pediatrics. I thouhgt i wanted to be on the patient care side of healthcare until I shadowed a pediatrician. Then I realized that I liked the clinical diagnostic part of healthcare rather than direct patient care. So I pursued laboratory science. It was the best decision I made.
Know yourself and you're interests. That'll help guide you.
