When I first entered university, I was so stumped on deciding my major. While I had my freshman year to explore before having to declare it the following year, I had my mind set on sociology. But by the time I graduated, I am a major in political science.
How I arrived at political science was dependent on a number of factors, but I find the most important thing is to always keep an open mind. In the beginning, I thought that sociology was interesting and thought-provoking and had closed off any other options. Incidentally, I took an intro course on political science and had was completely convinced that political science was where my interests lie.
Most often than not, these moments of clarity can only come with an open mind, as well as a constant desire to learn and explore. Always abiding by these has allowed me to mature as a person, while also allowing me to discover various interests and motivations as I progressed through university, and now in my career.

What an excellent question Avery! I agree with Valeria, making a list is super helpful with most things in life. I jumped into being an education major and now I work for an accounting firm. Life will take you on all types of fun adventures! The most important factors should be what makes you happiest, what makes you feel most satisfied and fulfilled, do you have hobbies or interests that are enriching to your life. These are just starters and you’ll form your own as you go along. Your major should be something you sincerely enjoy because you’ll spend a nice chunk of time in that field. Also, don’t be afraid to change it if you’re on your path and it starts to not feel fun anymore. That’s ok too. Give yourself time to sit with questions and find the best answers for yourself. I’m sending you every good wish.
Make a list of what you're looking for...or, if it's easier, what you're not.
Focus on what makes you feel the most passion.

Start by making a list of careers or jobs that catch your interest. Then, jot down your skills and things you'd love to learn. You could also make a list of the top jobs in the current market. Remember, the major you choose is just the beginning. There are countless courses and certifications you can add to it. Try to create a path that guides you toward what you truly want. You’ve got this!
