What helped you gain confidence in your work, especially when presenting your ideas to others who might not see your vision right away?

I’m a college sophomore, and I’m really interested in interior design. I also enjoy reading, writing, and painting—basically anything creative that lets me express myself or see things from a different perspective. I like the idea of designing spaces that feel both functional and meaningful.

Dear Carlee,

That sounds awesome! I would love to see a space that you've designed some day! To answer your question, the thing that has helped me gain the most confidence in my work would be our children. I know that I have something good going on when our kids get excited about it. I don't care too much about what most grown-ups think. Sadly, most of them have very little or no imagination. Get your feedback from little ones, they will probably be your future clients anyway. Plus, they are super helpful in making suggestions and will give you completely honest feedback on your work.

Sincerely,

womble dean (that's the name for my inner-child)

Howard’s Answer

Dear Carlee,

Put yourself first—you truly deserve it! Remember, anything valuable in life takes time, energy, and effort. This includes caring for yourself—your self-care, healing, growth, and happiness. Treat yourself with the same love and kindness you would give to someone you cherish. You are that important!

Try meditation—it’s a great way to connect with yourself and just be with your thoughts without judging them. Let it help you find balance and direction.

Do more of what makes you happy! When you do what you love, motivation comes easily. And with motivation comes real, unstoppable confidence.

Keep learning and growing. Every new skill you learn makes you unique and strengthens you from within.

And remember: experience is the best teacher. The more you try, the more confident you become.

Best wishes,
Prof. C
