These kinds of skills don’t always come naturally, and that’s completely okay. Like anything worth having, they take practice and patience. But the more you put yourself out there—engaging with people, asking questions, really listening—the more confident and capable you’ll become.
Where I went to college, we had a saying: “learn by doing.” I’ve found that to be true far beyond the classroom. Trying new things, occasionally failing, learning from those moments, and then trying again—that process is where real growth happens.
In fact, I’ve gotten more than one job not just because of what I knew, but because of the energy, attitude, and genuine connection I brought to the conversation. Sometimes people hire you because of your “vibe”—because they trust that you’ll grow into what you don’t know yet. Being someone people enjoy working with can be just as important as technical skill.
And here’s something else I’ve learned: you can always start building the skills you think you’ll need on the job—read, take courses, practice. But in my experience, most of the skills that truly shape your career are the ones you learn while doing the job itself. One of the things I continue to have to work on is listening to what the other person is saying and be able to empathize and understand. Repeating back what you heard and confirm what they said. This is a skill that I continue to have to work on... It is basic but will come up throughout your career.
