How to choose what area of specialty for an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner?

I will be attending school in the fall for an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. The question I commonly keep getting asked is where I want to work with that degree. I find myself saying I don't know a lot and expressing that I hope it's like nursing school where I just kind of find out along the way. Aside from knowing I want to stay in the hospital setting, I really haven't a clue. #nurse-practitioner #acute-care #medicine #healthcare #hospital-and-healthcare

Mark’s Answer

I would encourage you to research schools, programs and look at why your considering this route. I would also recommend a great way to learn is thru connecting with professionals already in this field. The person can always give great insight to what they have learned along the way and be good guide. Above all ask questions and look at what your strengths are and make a plan.

Agree with Mark about connecting within in the field. I would just add that you should try and figure out what attracts you the field or what do you feel passionate about. For example, most NPs have practiced as an RN and will have idea what areas that attract them and what areas that they would not like. In addition, a lot of NPs start off with general practice but then move into a specialty area. It’s a good method of training for NPs
