What type of programs should I look for in colleges, when wanting a future career in athletic training?

I am a 17-year-old junior in high school. And I know I want a career in athletic training, but I’m not sure what to search for when looking at colleges.

Johnson’s Answer

When searching for college programs that align with a career in athletic training, look for majors such as Sports and Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or Anatomy and Physiology, as these provide the foundational knowledge required for the field. Many schools are transitioning away from standalone athletic training bachelor’s degrees, so if you’re considering becoming a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), researching master’s programs and their preferred undergraduate majors is a smart move. Connecting with academic advisors and program directors can also help ensure you're selecting courses that meet certification and graduate program requirements. Staying informed about evolving trends in athletic training education will give you a strong start toward your career.

Peyton’s Answer

Hi there!

So programs for athletic training are pretty flexible! Some people go as basic as a major in Biology or sometimes even Anatomy and Physiology. My suggestion is to look into schools that you can major in Sports and Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or Athletic training (however, most schools are removing the athletic training bachelor’s degree).

If you plan on becoming an ATC and are looking into Master’s programs for athletic training, you can also always ask them what majors they prefer! It is best to choose a major that will help you get the required courses completed. Hope this helps!
