Is there any benefit to getting a degree beyond a Bachelor's for a law enforcement career?

I want to eventually work my way up to become a Chief of Police in a large city, for example. I'm wondering if I need a Master's of any kind.

Maya,

Many departments have tuition assistance to help you pay for your schooling. I recommend waiting a while before going for the Master's, until you become a Sgt. Why?

  1. the possibility of tuition assistance.
  2. having gotten some experience, you will be able to have a much better understanding and participate more in the classes.
  3. Your degree will be "fresh." You will be up on the current way of thinking. If you get a master's degree, and don't start moving into mgt. for another ten years, I am concerned the degree, and the effort it took to get it, won't be viewed as highly as someone with a more recent degree.

I suggest you concentrate on getting some good assignments within the department, so you can be exposed to a broad range of activity. Start with becoming a Field Training Officer, and then a detective and sergeant. You want to get into "the action," as opposed to working administrative roles.

Wish you the best!

Kim
