What are pros and cons of being a firefighter ?

I’m a middle schooler who is considering firefighting as a career since I was a little kid but, I was wondering if it is the right path for me what are the pros and cons of being a firefighter?

Great question! I spent 30 years on the Chicago Fire Department and I don't regret it at all. It can be a challenging and rewarding career where you have the ability to help people during both routine situations as well as critical ones. You also get the satisfaction of working with a team in emergencies when a high level of performance is demanded of all.

Having a firefighter in the family, I can say the ups and downs are a bit like being an ER doctor. Sometimes the hours are tough, but other times they're great, depending on the day's events. My family member once spent a whole summer away on a wildland crew, which might not be your path, but it's good to be ready for the unexpected. The best part is knowing you make a real difference by helping others, and you don't carry work stress home. Plus, you get to serve and support your community.

Yes Antonio, it is definitely a wonderful career! The people really greatly appreciate this sort of work, protecting their loved ones and their property. It does come with it's Pros and Cons though!

Pros Cons
1. Benefits and job security 1. The pay is fairly ordinary.
2. You get specialized training in firefighter safety 2. The training requirements are continual.
3. The camaraderie of being in a team 3. You miss family events.
4. No take homework 4. You see innocent people suffering.
5. People love you (high job approval) 5. There is danger.
6. There is a sense of fulfillment and purpose 6. Your family worries about you.
