Hello, Princess Asoma !

You are a student of Fashion Design at GH Fashion School which does not teach Modeling. Modeling requires in depth training as it is a specific career for which one needs to learn how to model and know how the business is run. This is not learned through a Fashion Design Program, however.

If you haven't put in too much time so far at GH Fashion School, and you want to really become a Model, you may have to consider discontinuing your Fashion Design Program and enroll in Modeling School. If you are at the middle point or end of your fashion design path to obtain your Bachelors Degree in Fashion Design, my advice is to remain with that program, get your degree and then go to Modeling School when you graduate. Do not rely on your Fashion Design School to network or make contacts for being a Model.

More advice along those lines, do not talk about or tell anyone at your program that you "want to be a model". You will be expected to be completely focused on fashion design until you graduate. Telling someone there that you want to really be a Model can jeopardize how they see you as a fashion design student. Surely, if projects come up you could offer to model a classmate's clothing at school for a project if need be, but just keep the modeling aspirations under wraps for now. The truth is, because of the intense nature of both being a designer and a model, you wouldn't be able to do these two careers simultaneously. You should also have become aware already of the world of modeling if you are towards the end of a fashion design path. People may think one can do both careers at the same time, but Modeling requires one to be available 24/7 for "go sees". projects and travel that is involved. You wouldn't have much time to dedicate to fashion design.

As for "what it takes" to be a Model, you may have already had the chance to observe some models since you are in a Fashion Design program. To do it professionally, you'll need to be available 24/7 and obtain an offer from an agency that represents models, one that chooses you. You do not go about this by using social media and having your images and identity online like that as there are problems with that and it's not done that way. Modeling School will teach you everything you'd need to know about the business, including how to start your career. So if you will continue with fashion design, hold off right now with getting photos or sending out to model casting websites. You really need training first. Also, sometimes modeling schools sign the students on to their agency and represent them, so everything about Modeling School is the best way to do it.

There are no educational or academic degrees that will qualify you for Modeling, just a substantial amount of training from professionals and some experience, both of which you could obtain through the modeling school.

So when you would begin your Modeling training is going to really depend on where you're at in Fashion School. Did you just begin or are you pretty much in your Junior or Senior year. Do you want to follow through with the rigorous path of fashion design, or do you want to quit and start training for modeling ? When people do not know about the fashion industry, it seems all very light and simple but it is demanding and every niche has responsibilities, expectations and great amounts of time needed each day. So it's up to you to decide what you really want to do.

The Modeling Schools in your area are B2 Models, Dag Modeling School and Agency, Ghana Modeling Academy and Topclass Talent Management. There are also Prime Modeling Agency, Tiptoe Model Management, Black Phases Modeling Agency which all teach and prepare models for a professional career. Whenever you decide to train, you can contact these places for the training you will need.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !

It usually doesn’t take a specific degree to become a model, but having some training (like what you’re getting at GH Fashion School) can definitely help with confidence and skills. What matters more are things like building a strong portfolio, practicing posing and walking, and knowing which type of modeling you want to pursue (fashion, commercial, runway, print, etc.).

You might want to connect with local photographers for test shoots, attend open casting calls, and check if your school has ties with agencies. Many aspiring models also start by posting their work consistently on social platforms to get noticed.

Networking is key—agencies, photographers, makeup artists, and stylists can all play a role in giving you opportunities. Stay professional, build your confidence, and remember that persistence is a big part of the journey.
