Kyle’s Answer

I’ve learned that teachers come in all personality types, there’s no single mold that defines a great educator. What truly matters is being authentic and genuinely caring for your students. When you show up as your true self and invest in their growth, you create an environment where learning and achievement thrive. Just as there’s no one-size-fits-all approach for teachers, the same goes for students. Each one deserves a personalized path to success.

Thank you for your question. I am glad to know that you would like to become a teacher.
Below are some essential elements of a teacher:
1..Have passion to develop the next generations
2. Good communication skills
3. Be open minded. Listen to the voice of students
4. Continuous learning on new knowledge. Keep yourself up to date
5. Be patience
No single teaching methodology suitable to every student. Listen and communicate with the students.
And, you can learn more teaching skills in college.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Kelli’s Answer

Addison,
I have not been a traditional teacher, but I was a corporate trainer for 5 years and learned a lot teaching the adult learner. I would say for personality traits that proved well for me were being flexible, having clear communication, analytical, organized and caring!! Really thinking outside the box and having contingency plans are also good tips. Hope this helps.

Deborah’s Answer

Hi Addison!
Great question! My advice is to be authentic, let yourself shine! It’s important to be an active listener, meaning listen with your ears and eyes! This will assist you in getting to know your students and in essence teaching them through their independent learning styles. Once they trust you, you can help them soar! Another personality trait is perseverance. Continue to go to school and webinars as this world is forever changing! Teachers are humans, you will have rough days, stick with it. Treat yourself kind and always start each day fresh, but evaluate what made your previous day rough in order to fine tune. Good luck in your future endeavors!

Hi Addison -

Thanks for your great question! I like the answer that teachers come in all personality types, but there are a couple of essential skills you need, for sure.

First, you must be flexible. Whether that is on a year-long scale (like your principal tells you that you're suddenly going to teach physics when you studied chemistry), or on minute-to-minute time scale (like "oh no! the school's internet is down and I planned my lesson around this one online simulator), teachers must make thousands of decisions an hour and roll with whatever unexpected hurdles come their way.

Second, you must be steady and responsible dealing with kids. The best teachers form personal relationships with their students, but you must remember that you're not their friend. You have to make good, mature decisions at all times.

Finally, it helps if you're a performer. Sometimes you have to do a song and dance to get and hold their attention - literally! Don't be afraid to put yourself out there in front of a group of judgmental kids each day; you'll soon get used to it and your shining personality will be infectious in your classroom.

Teaching is hard. Very very very hard. But it is so rewarding. Good luck!
