Does the London Police accept non-citizens?

The London Police requires applicants to live in the UK for 3 years prior to joining.

- If I go to University in the United Kingdom (Great Britain) on a Student Visa, does that count towards the three years’ residency requirement to join the London MET Police?
- Is the London MET Police a Home Office-approved sponsor of a Skilled Worker Visa?

Dear Regan,

I hope this message finds you well.

In response to your inquiry:

Residency Requirement. Time spent in the UK under a Student Visa does not usually count toward the three-year residency requirement for joining the Metropolitan Police, as this visa does not establish the type of unrestricted residency needed for vetting, as of 2025.

Skilled Worker Visa Sponsorship. The Metropolitan Police Service is a Home Office-approved sponsor and can sponsor eligible applicants under the Skilled Worker Visa route.

I trust this clarifies your questions, and I wish you the best in your plans.

Kind regards!

Hello Regan,

Important changes to the Skilled Worker Visa will start on July 22, 2025. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Skill Level Increase: Jobs now need a degree-level qualification (RQF Level 6). About 180 jobs will no longer qualify.

2. Higher Salary Requirements: The minimum salary will rise to £41,700 per year or the "going rate" for the job, whichever is more. There are exceptions for new entrants, PhD holders, and specific listed roles.

3. Care Worker Roles Removed: Hiring from overseas for care worker roles will stop, affecting roles under SOC 6135 and SOC 6136.

4. Dependants Rules: Only workers in RQF Level 6 or higher jobs can bring family members. Lower-skilled roles won't qualify unless already sponsored in the UK before the changes.

5. Transitional Measures: Current visa holders and those with pending applications before the changes can continue under the old rules temporarily.

Police Registration for Visa Students
For students with a student visa in London, the police registration requirement has been removed as of 4 August 2022.
This change means that students no longer need to register with the UK police after arriving in the UK. However,
it is still necessary to inform the police of any changes to personal details, such as address or marital status, within 7 days.
Students should destroy any existing police registration certificates before disposal

Hi Regan,

It would depend on what you are looking to do with the Metropolitan Police Service. For Police Constables, if you are not a UK citizen then you will need to have permanent residency, normally through indefinite leave to remain. For Police Staff or Admin roles, a Skilled Worker Visa may be possible.

Usually, a student visa alone is not enough to satisfy requirements for obtaining indefinite leave to remain in the UK, however the exact options available can be found on the Home Office's website and guidelines.

See Nationality and Eligibility sections on the below Metropolitan Police Service resources:

* Police Constable eligibility requirements: https://www.met.police.uk/police-forces/metropolitan-police/areas/c/careers/police-officer-roles/police-constable/overview/who-are-we-looking-for/
* Police Staff and Admin role eligibility requirements: https://www.met.police.uk/police-forces/metropolitan-police/areas/c/careers/police-staff-roles/who-are-we-looking-for/

Home office resource around indefinite leave to remian:

* https://www.gov.uk/indefinite-leave-to-remain

Please be aware that these regulations often change and to review them periodically to ensure you remain up to date.

Good luck!
