Hi, Juan! College is an exciting time in your life. It's important that you do research on different types of colleges and universities and that you consider factors such as academic offerings, social life, school size, financial aid options, etc. Do you want to be close to home? Do you prefer a big university or a small college? Does the college offer your preferred academic areas? Do you want to play a sport or be involved in social organizations such as a fraternity? These are a few things to consider.

Look to your mentors and close family members for guidance, but listen to your own heart and mind above all. Once you've narrowed your list of colleges and universities, take the time to visit your top choices in person. There's no substitute for that feeling you get when you've found the right place!

Hi Juan,

There is no hard and fast rule how many people you should ask for advice. Ask when you need advice and make sure you ask people who are familiar with current admission processes.

Fundamentally, you are planning your life as an adult. Do the research into the career field you want to pursue, into universities you are interested in, into scholarships and other ways to finance your studies and in application procedures. You are going to need up-to-date information for the application process. The web is at your fingertips to help you find that information so you don't have to depend in third-hand experiences from 10 years ago.

Make sure to write your own essays. Admission officers read college applications for a living (1000s of them every year). They can smell an essay that was written by a parent or by AI from a mile away. It's more important to be genuine and authentic than to be perfect.

Good people to ask for advice:
- Parents and teachers/counselors who know you to discuss general life and career advice.
- Admission officers to ask concrete questions about the admission process.
- Practitioners in the jobs you are considering for advice on career paths and future professional opportunities.
- People who are good writers and have attention to detail to look over your application materials and fix spelling errors and grammar issues.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
