Hello, Julia !
The best way to learn about a Humanitarian Logistics career is to actually learn exactly what is entailed in the work. Because of the nature of this work, there is absolutely no typical day and it would be impossible to say what the day to day is like. Knowing what you would do would help you better understand the work so that you can make a decision as to whether this work is for you or not.
The basis of the work entails getting help to people during a disaster. You would be responsible in this role for managing the entire supply chain, encompassing activities like procurement, supplier management, transportation, warehousing, inventory management, customs clearance, distribution, tracking and tracing, and reverse logistics. You would coordinate and manage the goods, services, and information to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations affected by disasters or conflicts.
There can be no day to day description because this work is for things that haven't happened yet and all disasters are different and in different parts of the world. There's a lot more to this position which you will learn as you read up more about it and watch presentational videos about it. The work entails a huge amount of responsibility and sometimes you may have to go to regions that have extreme weather. I left a link below to some videos about this work for you so you can obtain more information. The Humanitarian Logistics Association has 3,000 members but there's no count on how many are in the U.S. The HLA can be very helpful in answering any questions about this career.
While you're at it, you can also read about the Humanitarian Logistician Certification that one needs in order to do this work. That information is in a link below. A good major and degree for this career would be a Master of Advanced Studies in Humanitarian Logistics and Management. You can get a Bachelors Degree in Logistics with a specialization in Humanitarian Logistics. This path would teach you supply chain management, emergency procurement, and crisis response. Other Bachelor Degree majors for this work would be Logistics Systems, Trade and Distribution Logistics, or Production Logistics.
So get an understanding of the work by reading about it and watching presentation videos and know that it's basically a large responsibility role in which you coordinate staff and supplies to help people during disasters and emergencies.
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
