Paul’s Answer

It really depends on what your career goals are going to be. If you want to teach in a junior college, you will need a minimum of a Master's degree. If you want to do research or work at a university, you will need a doctoral or a Ph.D

If you want to become a therapist you will need to complete a supervised clinical experience and pass a state required exams and licensing requirements. These educational paths normally take 8-13 years in total after high school.

While most psychology specializations require a doctorate, some roles, such as school or industrial-organizational psychology, may only require a master's degree and supervised experience.

Conrad’s Answer

To become a psychologist you need to complete a PhD in counseling, clinical or professional psychology (AKA a psy.d).

If you go from a bachelors degree into a doctorsl program plan to spend 4-5 years completing coursework, practica and dissertation and then you'll do a paid one year full time internship. After that it's first job or postdoc for specializing and licensure.

As you can see it's a big commitment so it helps to know this is what you're willing to give your energy to for several years. I loved my PhD program enjoyed learning in class and practica and also liked doing my research for my dissertation on grief and loss. It's important to be able to learn to become an independent learner the biggest change from undergrad to PhD.

There's one masters degree program that earns the label school psychologist. Typically school psychologists do assessments and write reports for their evaluations of children with disabilities to qualify for special education. I found this role too confining. I did create and lead school based mental health programs which I loved doing and are attracting more and more funding...

Don’s Answer

Hello Ryley,

It is good that you are thinking about a career in psychology. It is a very useful degree if this is what you want to do and is very important right now in society. Depending on where you live and what qualifications you get it is usually anywhere between 4 to 12 years of school. If this is something that interests you, go for it. I wish you the best of luck!

Niels’s Answer

It might vary by country, but in the Netherlands, becoming a psychologist usually takes about four years of university study. After that, you can choose to specialize in certain areas of psychology through a master's program.
