Good Morning Dylen!
Hello there. Our family has a very long connection with working on motors namely my grandfather Billy Sheard.
He was often bothered by me in his performance of mechanic duties. When I was a child of eighteen months of age in 1959 he was working on a four cylinder diesel marine engine and he was about to put the head back on the motor. Well guess who came along - yours faithfully with a glass milk bottle in hand and threw it into the motor! Well after that I heard my grandfather call my father, his son in law and said - "Con, get this kid out of here!"
Through the years I watched my grandpa rebuild many engines sometimes for as little as $20! I still remember when Bill got a new car a Chrysler Valiant Safari in 1966. He took me for a test drive and pressed the car up to 100 miles an hour.
How do you excel in your trade? Like a maestro with a violin, you practice until the cows come home!

Good Afernoon Dylen!
Once you get to spending 50 years and 100,000 hours doing some procedure you tend to get pretty good at it or at least you find out how to save time and not waste time well that's what happened with me writing software since 1972. Consequently my advice to you is continue for the longest time working on engines - try to examine methods of reducing the amount of time spent on the task.
GOD BLESS!

Thank you for your question. I am glad to know that you have interest on motor related careers.
Below are my suggestions :
1. There are many motor related careers, e.g. automotive engineer, automotive designer, automotive journalist, race car driver, engine designer, car sales, etc. You can find out more related careers online
2. Find out more on these careers and determine what you have interest
3. Speak to someone who are working in these careers. Seek guidance from your mentor, school career counsellor, your parents, etc.
4. Shortlist 1-2 careers you would like to pursue
5. Explore the entry criteria of relevant subjects in college or vocational school
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
May Almighty God bless you!

Hi, Dylen !
The first thing that you'd need is to express the exact career that you want to explore. You didn't indicate that you mean automotive motors or non-automotive motors, so your first step is to explore working with motors as a whole.
If you know the vast range of careers you could have working with motors, you can then decide where to start. There are careers working as Diesel Service Technicians and Mechanics, Small Engine Mechanics for motorcycles, boats, lawn mowers, and other outdoor power equipment, Heavy Vehicle and Mobile Equipment Service Technicians for machinery used in construction, farming, and mining, which rely on powerful motors and complex mechanical systems., Electric Motor Repairman. Electromedical Equipment Repairer, a Motor Mechanic for industrial and commercial machinery. Aircraft and Avionics Equipment Mechanic and Technician and Millwright or Pump Mechanic for industrial motors, pumps, and heavy machinery, often in manufacturing or power generation settings.
So your first step will be to choose which type of motor work you want to do so that you can learn more about it. Some high schools offer Auto Mechanics classes but there are no high schools in Atlantic, Iowa that offer Auto Mechanics. For now, see if you can volunteer in a shop that deals with motors and make your longer range goal to attend Powersports & Power Equipment Technology AAS Degree program offered by Iowa Lakes Community College. There is also Powersports and Small Engine Repair Technology program at Columbia Western Institute. There's also an online program Penn Foster’s Small Engine Repair Career Diploma, but it will be just concepts and theory and obviously no hands on work to give you experience since it's online.
The only motor repair shops near you deal with car motors and you can visit them to see if you can volunteer in their shop. Learn while you volunteer. Visit and inquire at Rick's Auto Clinic, Second Street Repair, Mike Hansen As The Shop LLC, Dave's Auto Repair, Atlantic Motor Supply (NAPA) and Arnold Motor Supply in your town of Atlantic, Iowa.
When I worked in social services, I once had a client that liked to tinker with motors and had no formal experience with it. He would put together model motors from kits. This may be a good venture for you, too. They most likely sell kits of model motors at hobby shops or you probably could look online and have your parents buy you a few to start.
You should return here to Career Village for advice and be detailed in what you want to know so that we can help you along the way for your specific circumstances. Mention what grade you are in and what types of motors you want to start out with.
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
