Here's a helpful tip from someone who has reviewed many resumes: If you're just starting out and don't have much work experience, try to keep your resume to one page. Focus on the skills or experiences that match what the job is looking for, as mentioned in the job posting. Remember, less is more when you're new to the workforce. This approach increases the chances that a hiring manager will read your entire resume. You've got this!

Hi Favio,

You've already received a lot of great advice on your CV's format and content. I'd like to add two quick suggestions from my own experience.

First, it's always good practice to have someone else read your CV before you submit it. A fresh pair of eyes can often spot small mistakes or unclear phrases that we miss in our own work. This review can elevate your CV, making it a much stronger fit for the job.

Second, speaking of "fit," you should always tailor your CV for the specific role you're applying for. Think about the key qualities and skills they are looking for in that particular job, and then adjust your resume to highlight the experiences that directly support them.

Good luck!

Favio,

Because this will be your first job, this means you do not have work experience. But, you DO have life experience that is relevant towards a job!

You want to show that you are the person an employer wants. What do employers want? Someone who shows up on time, or calls ahead to say they can't make it. Someone who gets along with the rest of the employees. Someone who is focused on safety. Someone who can help them to make or save money.

Your goal is to prove you are that person. You may have to draw on your schooling or extra-curricular activities. Don't just say, "I was on the football team." Add a line about complying with the rules and learning proper techniques, "so as to minimize the risk of injury to myself or others." "Trained together with my teammates." "attended 2-a -day practices, every day and on-time." Recognized for perfect attendance.

how to show you can help make or save money? Anything that is safety oriented is helping to save money! On the job injuries, or injuries to customers, cost the business money! "Mopped floors after practice, setting out the wet floor signs."

It seems overly simplistic, but, you cannot assume the reader knows what is involved in other activities you are engaged in. They don't know the importance of being a spotter in gymnastics. you have to explain it a little!

There is no ONE right way to write a resume. It is your marketing tool, so you use it to present yourself in the best possible light. There are lots of wrong ways to write a resume. Don't embellish. Don't lie. Don't try to use big words to sound impressive. Proofread it. Typos make you appear careless. Do not use any slang or jargon. Make sure to include a phone number and email address. A professional email address, Not "joelikestoparty."

Include volunteer activities, clubs, leadership.

Keep it SHORT. Your first resume should not be longer than one page!

good luck!

Hi Favio,

Everyone wonders about this at some point in their career! Since this is for your first job, I recommend highlighting your current skills and accomplishments. Keep your résumé to one page and include a cover letter tailored to the roles you’re applying for. Most importantly, make use of all available resources whether it’s AI tools, YouTube tutorials, or advice from family members with professional experience.

Writing a resume for your first job is an important step. First, you can start with your contact information at the top. This includes your full name, phone number, email address, and city and state. Next, write a summary or objective. This is 1–2 sentences about who you are and what kind of job you are looking for.

Then, include your education. List your school name, the city and state, and your graduation year (or expected graduation year). You can also list any awards or special classes you've taken.

After that, add a section for skills. This can include things like communication, time management, teamwork, or computer skills (like Microsoft Word or Google Docs). Be honest about what you can do.

If you have done volunteer work, helped with school clubs, or done projects, add an experience section. Include where you did the activity, your role, and what you learned or accomplished.

Finally, make sure your resume looks clean and easy to read. Use bullet points and short phrases. Keep it to one page. Always check for spelling and grammar mistakes.

You don't need a long resume to make a good impression. Just be clear, organized, and show your willingness to learn. That matters a lot to employers looking to hire someone for their first job.

Paula’s Answer

Great question. Since you may not have much work experience as this is your first resume, I would focus on your skills and how you have used them to date. It is great to identify and discuss extracurricular activities and/or hands-on learning experiences such as clinics, labs, independent study, etc. Consider identifying and discussing any volunteer activities or experiences. Focus on activities that demonstrate that you are hardworking and attentive to detail, that you regularly meet deadlines, that you understand how to prioritize tasks, that you are organized, and dedicated to learning new things. Always make sure to spell check and proofread, and as others have suggested, it is best to keep it to one page. Good luck with your resume and your first role!

For your first job, your resume should focus on showing your potential and enthusiasm to learn. Start with a clear summary that highlights who you are, your interests, and your career goals. Then list your education, including your degree, school name, and expected or completed graduation date.
Add a skills section with both technical and soft skills. For example, communication, teamwork, computer skills, or any tools you know.
Include any experience you have, even if it’s not a formal job like internships, volunteer work, school projects, or freelance work all count. Under each experience, describe what you did and what you learned or achieved. You can also add a projects or achievements section to show any awards, certifications, or personal projects related to the role you want. Keep it simple, well-organized, and one page long. Focus on what makes you capable, reliable, and ready to grow in your first professional role.
