Hello, Margaret !
This is a great question about the exciting Fashion Industry. Three important roles with distinctive duties, only beginning to show how diverse a career in Fashion could be !
Becoming a Fashion Merchandiser is one of the wonderful career options that entails critical think skills and making choices. Merchandisers are in charge of making sure the right products are available in the right stores, at the right time, in the right quantities, and at the ideal price to maximize sales to ensure profits. This takes planning and keeping up with trends. They interact with and work with designers, buyers, suppliers, and marketing teams.
A Fashion Buyer purchases items for a store. This role requires analytical skills to know about buying patterns, market trends, and sales data to make informed purchasing decisions that align with the company's brand and target market. They attend fashion shows, trade fairs, and showroom presentations, often planning purchases up to a year in advance. Also included in this position is the ability to negotiate prices with suppliers and knowing how to make a profit. They manage budgets and make sure inventory levels are right to meet the demand for the products and items.
A Fashion Planner is a Merchandiser and responsible for the same duties. This role acts as a bridge between the creative and commercial sides of the fashion industry, combining analytical skills with market insights to drive sales and enhance the customer shopping experience.

In my experience as a designer representative, I was responsible for merchandising the sales floor each month for each store that represented carried the designers merchandise within my market. I represented the designer. The buyers were from their own store, such as Saks Fifth Avenue or Neiman Marcus. I would go to market, where buyers w marketould could purchase the next seasons goods, just to voice my opinion about my specific market and what the client there preferred markets. The buyers represented the entire country so they could see sales, but not always what was unique to each market. Then the planners would allocate the goods based on each markets sales history.
