How can you decide if a school is worth the cost and debt?

I am a senior, and I plan to study either Baking and Pastry Arts or Conservation and Sustainability.

Thank you comment icon Are you looking for conservation and sustainability within culinary or completely separate from culinary? Christopher Anderson, CSC

Adeniyi’s Answer

I am really drawn to conservation and sustainability, and that's where I want to focus. I also believe in following your passion. It's important to remember that passion alone doesn't always pay the bills unless you have financial support. Look for a career path with good job prospects. Sustainability jobs are increasing because more companies value them. You can always pursue your passion on the side or as a minor. Some people are fortunate enough that their passion eventually becomes profitable, allowing them to dedicate more time to it. Whatever path you choose, keep your enthusiasm alive.

Phill’s Answer

Hey Rex,

It is great to hear that you have some interests that you are looking pursuing and are curious if the schooling for it is worth the debt and time. This is a great thing to consider specially with the fact that universities are extremely expensive in the United States compared to other countries. Depending on your financial obligation, you can be left with loans to pay off for many years to come, but also possibly not. There is always the chance of gaining scholarships to help with your financial obligations. What matters is that you follow your passion or attempt to find your passion. Taking a step forward will get you closer to the future you are meant to be having.

If you find that your passion that you are looking to pursue requires a degree, then it would be more than worth the school debt. Even though it is a lot, having a college education is great not just for your career, but will challenge who you are as a person in the best of ways. It is important to play carefully as to stay on budget. This can be within transportation, food, and living expenses. There are also ways you can save on tuition. You will most likely be required to take mandatory general education classes. You should be able to take these at a community college, for much cheaper tuition, and transfer the credits over to your university. There might even be a chance it can be done remotely as to save on travel time. Either way, if you have a passion for it then it will be worth investing in.

Best of luck on your journey!

Bill’s Answer

Rex,

Adeniyi and Phill gave you solid advice. It's important to follow your passion and keep your enthusiasm high. Talk to professionals in your fields of interest. Ask them about job availability and the lifestyle or work-life balance their careers offer.

If you choose college, as Phill suggested, look for scholarships, take GED classes at a community college, and set a budget. Learning to budget is a lifelong skill. Whether you're interested in Pastry Arts or Sustainability, do your research. Speak with successful people in those fields to learn about their journeys.

In trades like Baking and Pastry Arts, apprenticeships can be a good way to learn without the debt of college. Consider if you can afford to live and eat while earning a small income. Again, budgeting is key. If you're thinking about trade school, research costs and potential earnings. Talk to professionals, not just recruiters. I went to culinary school and was misled about job prospects.

For fields like conservation and sustainability, a science degree might be necessary. Research the cost of education and job opportunities. Create a budget to see how much you can afford for school and how long it will take to repay any loans. Ensure you can make loan payments and still live safely.

Approach your life with passion and enthusiasm. Also, focus on your budget. Think about the lifestyle and work-life balance you want. Consider how your choices will impact your future, especially if you have a family later on.

I hope this helps, Rex. Stay passionate and enthusiastic!
