How does one apply for graduate assistantships in Music?

I want to get an assistantship in either composition or theory. However, i have no idea how to go about it. Also, bonus points if I can learn Japanese while doing it.

Are you currently in graduate school for music? Graduate assistantships are when you offer to assist or teach in conjunction with the professor of the class in exchange for a stipend that covers a portion of your tuition. If you are already in school, then I would reach out to the graduate coordinator as universities have a designated person or maybe a team assigned to the graduate student body. If you're not in school, I would recommend first looking into a school that offers a graduate degree in music and maybe also has a minor in Japanese so you could learn it? I would look at schools with good music programs, especially specific to theory or composition, and cross reference those schools with the ones that have a strong world languages department. Then when you apply, once you get in, you can apply for assistantship.

My experience has been that most institutions are up front about whether or not they have an assistantship to offer. These tend to be quite competitive and are applied for like other jobs when you're applying for the school itself. Something like this in composition or theory would most likely have you helping out with lectures and / or grading assignments and exams.

I haven't seen assistantships offered at the undergraduate level.
