Michael’s Answer

Among my peers (and editors and others in the industry) Instagram is by far the dominant social media place for posting one's images. It is also great for following those whose work you admire - and being inspired and learning from those images. Posting elsewhere will not hurt but my advice is to prioritize Instagram. I strongly suggest that you edit very tightly the images you post only showing your best work. It may also make sense to have separate personal and professional profiles and not mix them as the audience for each of the profiles is different.

Kelvin Kelly’s Answer

Hi H, I hope you're doing great! Starting Pinterest and Instagram accounts for your photography is a fantastic idea. These platforms can really help you show off your creative work, build your brand, and even make money from your skills.

Instagram is awesome for sharing photos and telling visual stories. You can use features like Stories, Reels, and carousel posts to make your work stand out. It's also a great place to connect with followers through comments, likes, and messages, helping you grow a loyal audience. Many photographers use Instagram as a digital portfolio where potential clients and collaborators can easily see their work. Posting regularly and engaging with your audience is important, and using hashtags and geotags can help more people discover your photos.

Pinterest works more like a visual search engine. People go there for inspiration and ideas. By sharing your photos on Pinterest, you can reach people looking for specific themes, like travel or nature photography. Pins on Pinterest last a long time, so they can keep bringing traffic to your website or blog, which is great for business opportunities. For instance, you could post landscape photos linked to a blog about your process to attract both fans and potential clients.

Using both Instagram and Pinterest together is a smart strategy. Instagram helps you build a community and brand identity, while Pinterest gives you long-term visibility. Together, they let you show off your work, gain followers, and turn them into clients or collaborators. To make the most of these platforms, keep a consistent style, use the right keywords and hashtags, and actively engage with your audience. Over time, they can become more than just a showcase; they could open doors to professional opportunities.

In short, starting accounts on both Instagram and Pinterest is a great move. They work well together, expand your reach, and offer both immediate engagement and lasting visibility for your photography career. I hope this helps!

David’s Answer

Hello H,
Pinterest and Instagram are fun but a website is more effective and professional.
Since I have little info to go on, I will give you the answers I give young people who show an interest in photography. You need to have an interchangeable lens camera and lens. Then, you have to understand how the camera works and be able to capture images that will interest clients. You have to decide on a genre of photography and look at the work, websites, of professionals who shoot in that genre. Your images have to look as good, or better, than theirs.
I recommend getting a college degree. That can provide an income while you establish your photography business. Also, college will expand your horizons and provide experiences that can aid your search for a career.
A career in the arts will be very challenging. It has to be your passion.
That's a start. All the best!
Thank you comment icon Thanks for the advice, David. I'm actually pursuing a college degree, nd Photography is one of my subjects in the course. I do have a professional camera and the basic technical skills and knowledge for the same. I just wanted to ask if it is a wise decision to show the pictures I clicked on online platforms this soon, since I'm only starting. H
