Is a cover letter entirely necessary for internships and co-ops? Either way what should be included in a general cover letter? #fall25
For most applications for jobs, internships, and co-ops, they add the ability to add a cover letter with your application. In most cases is this entirely necessary to include? Additionally, if you were to write a general cover letter to submit to most applications without editing it what should be included in it?

Hi Andrew. The answer is: it depends. Some employers require cover letter, while others make it optional. Even when it's optional, it's usually a good idea to include one. A cover letter gives you a chance to introduce yourself, explain why you are interested in the position, and highlight your skills and experiences in a way that your resume alone cannot. It can show employers that you are professional, enthusiastic, and serious about the opportunity. A strong cover letter can help you stand out from other applicants, even if the application doesn't require one.
If you want to write a general cover letter that you can use for most applications without editing it too much, there are some key things to include. Start with an opening paragraph that says who you are, what type of position you are looking for, and why you are interested in that type of work. In the middle of the letter, focus on your skills and experiences that are most relevant to internships or co-ops. This could include teamwork, communication, problem-solving, or technical skills. You can also mention your education, projects, or past work experience that show you can do the job. Keep the letter professional and clear, and try to keep it to one page. In the closing paragraph, restate your interest in the position, thank the employer for their time, and let them know you are open to an interview or further discussion.
While a cover letter may not always be required, having one is a smart way to improve your chances of getting noticed and landing an internship or co-op.
