How are students who are paying their own tuition managing? Are you guys working or constantly applying for scholarships?

I'm a freshman in college and am responsible for paying off my own tuition. My current school's financial aid doesn't cover totally everything, so there's about 6k that is not covered by loans; I can't take out any either because I don't have a cosigner. What do you guys recommend?

Paid for my own schooling and half of my wife’s (years apart, not at the same time). No school loans or other debts, just working full time while taking a full schedule of classes and applying for every scholarship available.

Be smart with your money. If you are able to take a transferable credit at a cheaper community college, I’d highly recommend it. Before buying textbooks for every class, try to attend a few classes or better yet, stay after class to introduce yourself to the professor and ask straight up - college and textbooks are expensive. Is the book listed in the syllabus absolutely required? For instance will our tests and assignments be taken directly from the book that I need to buy a copy to get a good grade in this class? OR if attend all the lectures and take good notes over the discussions, will I be okay?

You would be surprised with how many syllabi list a required textbook for the class, only for the professor to say that you would be fine without it as long as you show up and pay attention.
