Are Business Management and Marketing good majors that will help me in the future?

Hi Rebecca, I also wanted to add in my career path as another option for you to consider. I'm technically trained, biomedical engineering, and now I am a product marketing manager (combines marketing with some business). Not many people take this path and having a marketing and business management degree may get you here faster but it is another route that is possible. I was able to take this non-traditional path by starting my career at a smaller company where I was able to do lots of different things and was promoted to a product marketing role.

I also agree with Wong that AI will change how everyone works and it is best to learn more and try it out for yourself.

As a lecturer in business management and marketing, my advice is that both majors can be excellent choices for your future. They give you useful skills that can help you find good jobs in many different industries. Business and marketing are always in demand because every company needs people who can manage operations, make smart decisions, and promote their products or services. However, it's also important to understand that artificial intelligence is changing the way businesses work, and learning how to work with it will help you stay ahead in your career.

Business management is a strong major because it teaches you how companies run and how to lead people effectively. You learn about planning, finance, communication, and leadership. These skills are useful almost anywhere. With a degree in business management, you could become a project manager, team leader, business consultant, or even start your own business. These roles require problem-solving, organization, and people skills.

Marketing, on the other hand, focuses on understanding people and helping companies reach their customers. You learn how to build brands, advertise, and communicate effectively. Marketing combines creativity and data, so you get to be both imaginative and analytical. In today's world, marketing is more digital than ever. Professionals use social media, online ads, and customer data to design campaigns that attract attention and boost sales.

When it comes to the future of these fields, AI is already changing how businesses make decisions and communicate with customers. For example, marketers use AI to study what people like, predict what they might buy next, and create personalized advertisements. In management, AI helps analyze information quickly and make better decisions about how to run a company.

But even as AI becomes more common, human skills are still essential. Companies will always need people who can think critically, lead teams, communicate clearly, and come up with creative ideas. AI can handle data and routine tasks, but it can't replace leadership, empathy, and innovation.

Yes AI will undoubtedly change the way business management and marketing is conducted; however, it will likely change and enhance jobs rather than eliminating them.

Specifically, AI will automate routine tasks and create greater efficiencies around items such as data collection & reporting giving employees more time to focus on strategic work.

AI will also automate repetitive marketing tasks like data entry, email marketing and campaign scheduling, help predict market trends resulting in a more targeted and efficient approach to marketing. Consequently the focus will shift from routine tasks to more strategic and creative work.

Finally, after working 40+ years in corporate America I found that the human connection is what ultimately drives successful business relationships and AI will never be able to replace that connection!

From a practical point of view, it is extremely important to focus on applying for internships to attain exposure and entry level experience in business management and marketing. There are a number of excellent sites to find summer internships for high school and college students. Applications for summer 2026 internships typically close by December 2025, so now is a good time to explore opportunities.

hi, if you’re interested in both business and marketing, my advice is to get your undergraduate degree in business management and then get a masters in marketing. You can also do the reverse- you can get your undergrad degree in marketing and then go get your MBA. This is a good combo so whichever path you choose you can always take marketing courses while you’re studying business and vice versa. I think marketing without the business degree is not the best standalone major but if you combine it with a business degree, you’ll have a lot more opportunity.
